Attack on Titan is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. The series began in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on September 9, 2009, and has been collected into 21 tankōbon volumes as of December 2016.
Synopsis: Centuries ago, mankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls. What makes these giants truly terrifying is that their taste for human flesh is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. To ensure their survival, the remnants of humanity began living within defensive barriers, resulting in one hundred years without a single titan encounter. However, that fragile calm is soon shattered when a colossal titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations.
After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invading creatures, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to their eradication by enlisting into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that combats the merciless humanoids outside the protection of the walls. Based on Hajime Isayama's award-winning manga, Shingeki no Kyojin follows Eren, along with his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and his childhood friend Armin Arlert, as they join the brutal war against the titans and race to discover a way of defeating them before the last walls are breached.
Petra was kind and caring, as shown when she looked after and guided Eren when he was first admitted to the squad. She seemed to have acted as some sort of attachment figure for Eren among Levi's Squad as she was the one shown to worry about him. Although all of Levi's squad wished (and demanded, to an extent) Eren's unconditional trust, it was ultimately Petra who convinced him to do so.
I just want the weak who get swept along with the flow to be considered human, too.
Annie Leonhart (アニ・レオンハートAni Reonhāto?), is a graduate of the 104th Training Corps and former member of the Military Police Brigade. Her exceptional skill with swords and unarmed combat earned her the 4th rank, but she is noted to be a lone wolf that struggles to work with others.[9]
Along with Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover, she possesses the ability to shift into a Titan and serves Marley. Trained from an early age by her father,[10] she was sent to carry out a mission against humanity.[11] As the Female Titan, she served as a major antagonist of the series prior to being exposed and defeated by the military. After her defeat, she crystallized herself and was left in a comatose state.[12] She is currently being held deep underground under the custody of the Survey Corps.[13]
I'm making the choice. Give up your dreams and die for us. Lead the recruits straight into hell. I'll take out the Beast Titan.
Levi Ackerman (リヴァイ・アッカーマンRivai Akkāman?), often formally referred to as Captain Levi (リヴァイ兵長Rivai Heichō?), is the squad captain (兵士長Heishichō?, lit. "leader of the soldiers") of the Special Operations Squad within the Survey Corps, and is said to be humanity's strongest soldier.[1]
This world is cruel. And yet... so beautiful.
— Mikasa's personal outlook on the way the world works.[10]
Mikasa Ackerman (ミカサ・アッカーマンMikasa Akkāman?, also spelled as Mikasa Ackermann in the FUNimation sub of the anime) is the adoptive sister of Eren Yeager, and is the main female protagonist of the series.
After her biologicalparents were murdered by human traffickers, she was rescued by Eren and lived with him and his mother and father for approximately a year before the fall of Wall Maria.
Though she desires only to live a peaceful life with Eren, Mikasa chose to follow him into the military — where she is considered the best soldier among the 104th Training Corps — and later into the Survey Corps
As a soldier, I vowed long ago to dedicate my heart to the recovery of the human race! If my life ends while keeping that vow, I have no complaints!
Armin Arlert (アルミン・アルレルトArumin Arureruto?, also spelled as Armin Arlelt in the FUNimation sub of the anime) is a Titan shifter and elite soldier in the Survey Corps. He is also a childhood friend of Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman, and is one of the two deuteragonists of the series. Although he appears to be the physically weakest of the 104th Training Corps, his high intelligence and strategic genius makes him an invaluable asset, especially when paired with Hange Zoë's mind.
I'm gonna destroy them! Every last one of those animals that's on this earth!
Eren Yeager (エレン・イェーガーEren Yēgā?, also spelled as Eren Jaeger in the FUNimation sub of the anime) is a member of the Survey Corps and the main protagonist of Attack on Titan. He is the only son of Grisha and Carla Yeager, the younger half-brother of Zeke Yeager and the adoptive brother of Mikasa Ackerman,[21] as well as a Titan shifter and the current holder of the Coordinate.
He was born and raised in the Shiganshina District located on the southern edge of Wall Maria until the year 845, when the Colossus and Armored Titans breached the Wall, allowing a flood of Titans to invade and destroy the city. During the incident, Eren impotently witnessed his mother being murdered and eaten by Dina Yeager's mindless Titan, Grisha's previous wife.[22][23] This event aroused in Eren an intense hatred towards the Titans, and he swore to wipe all of them off the face of the earth.[20]
Two years later, he along with Mikasa Ackerman and his best friend Armin Arlert joined the 104th Training Corps. The three successfully graduated, with Eren ranking as the 5th best trainee, and they joined the Survey Corps following the Battle of Trost District.
I don't know... what's right anymore... But... I do know that I have to face the consequences of my actions... and carry out... my duty as a warrior to the end.
Reiner Braun (ライナー・ブラウンRainā Buraun?) is a warrior from a mysterious place outside the Walls he only refers to as his hometown. He is also a graduate of the 104th Training Corps and a former member of the Survey Corps. He ranked 2nd in the class and was regarded by others as a charismatic and a reliable big brother-like figure.
Along with Bertolt Hoover and Annie Leonhart, he is a person that possesses the ability to transform into a Titan and serves Marley - the nation that lives outside the Walls. In the year 845, he was on a mission with Bertolt to breach Wall Maria and infiltrate the military in search of the mysterious power known as the "Coordinate". After his true identity is revealed, he serves as a major antagonist and foil to Eren Yeager.
I am Historia Reiss, the true ruler of these Walls.
— Historia in Orvud District as she proclaims herself as the true queen[9]
Historia Reiss (ヒストリア・レイスHisutoria Reisu?) is the current queen of the Walls on Paradis. She is also the illegitimate child of the nobleman Rod Reiss and the last remaining member of the Reiss royal family. She was raised in isolation on one of the Reiss family estates until the fall of Wall Maria. Shortly after, her mother was murdered in front of her, and Historia was coerced into renouncing her name and claim to the Reiss heritage, taking on the new identity of Krista Lenz (クリスタ・レンズKurisuta Renzu?, also spelled as Christa Lenz in the FUNimation sub of the anime), and entering military service (which was expected to result in her death).
However, largely thanks to Ymir's influence, she graduated as the 10th best soldier within the 104th Training Corps and joined the Survey Corps. She eventually reclaimed her true name, becoming an important asset to the Corps and ascending to the throne after the success of the revolution against the capital.
Oh, no. None of you have done anything wrong. And you're not devils. It's just that you all have to die. There's nothing you can do now.
Bertolt Hoover (ベルトルト・フーバーBerutoruto Fūbā?, also spelled as Bertholdt Hoover in the FUNimation sub of the anime) was a warrior from a mysterious place outside the Walls he only referred to as his hometown. He was also a graduate of the 104th Training Corps and a former member of the Survey Corps. He ranked 3rd in the Training Corps and was described by others as a weak-willed and quiet person.
Along with Reiner Braun and Annie Leonhart, he was a person that possessed the ability to transform into a Titan and served Marley. In the year 845, he was on a mission with Reiner to breach Wall Maria and infiltrate the Military in search of the Coordinate. As the Colossus Titan, he served as a major antagonist.
I just don't want those charred bones I saw to be disappointed in me. I... I know what I have to do now.
Jean Kirstein (ジャン・キルシュタインJan Kirushutain?, also spelled as Jean Kirschtein in the FUNimation sub of the anime) is a graduate of the 104th Training Corps, among whom he ranked 6th best. Jean hails from Wall Rose's Trost District, and joined the military with hopes of obtaining a peaceful life as part of the Military Police Brigade, but would later find himself joining the Survey Corps.
I mean... most humans are weak, including me... but if I got an order from someone who saw things as I do... no matter how tough it was, I'd do my damnedest to carry it out.
Marco Bott (マルコ・ボットMaruko Botto?, also spelled as Marco Bodt in the FUNimation sub of the anime) was a member of the 104th Training Corps and graduated as the seventh highest ranked trainee in his class. He was assigned to fight the Titans after the breach of Trost District and was given command of his own squad.[5]
Sasha Blouse (サシャ・ブラウスSasha Burausu?, also spelled as Sasha Braus in the FUNimation sub of the anime) is a member of the Survey Corps and one of the few former members of the 104th Training Corps, of which she was ranked 9th best, that decided to join. A compulsive food hoarder with an overly polite way of speech, Sasha originates from Dauper, a village in the southern territory of Wall Rose.
You mean to tell me all I have left of my family is a portrait?!
Connie Springer (コニー・スプリンガーKonī Supuringā?, also spelled as Conny Springer in the FUNimation sub of the anime) is a member of the 104th Training Corps. He ranked 8th in class, and hails from the rural Ragako village within Wall Rose, his greatest ambition being to make his family and village proud of him. Upon graduation, he joined the Survey Corps.

After his true identity is revealed, he serves as a major antagonist and foil to Eren Yeager.
Then let me help you!! I will do anything it takes to right the wrongs of this world!!
Hange Zoë (ハンジ・ゾエHanji Zoe?) is the 14th and current Commander of the Survey Corps, named so by Erwin Smith before his death.[5] She is a former squad leader (分隊長Bun-taichō?, lit. "Leader of a squad") who was in charge of the fourth squad. Hange conducts research on Titans to the point of being obsessed with them and as such, is deeply interested in Eren Yeager; who has the ability to transform into a Titan. She is also known as "four eyes" by Levi. She is quiet smart and insane
How did they find out that there aren't any humans outside the Walls?
— Erwin asks his father a life changing question[4]
Erwin Smith (エルヴィン・スミスEruvin Sumisu?), often formally referred to as Commander Erwin Smith (エルヴィン・スミス団長Eruvin Sumisu Danchō?), was the 13th commander of the Survey Corps. Discerning, intelligent, and widely respected, Erwin was an able commander. While he cared deeply for his men, he did not hesitate to sacrifice them for the good and prosperity of mankind, and his men have proven more than willing to stake their lives at his order. Erwin developed the Long-Distance Enemy Scouting Formation, and due to much pressure on the Survey Corps, he later named Hange Zoë as his successor.[5] 1) Military police 2)Scouting Legion 3)Stationary Guard
Rough sketch of the human territory (not to scale)
The Walls reach about 50 meters in height from base to summit and are incredibly strong in substance.[3] However, the Female Titan was able to damage them when she attempted to climb over it,[4] and the Beast Titan was able to remove pieces of Wall Rose and throw them.[5]
The Walls are too long to be guarded in their entirety. The tops of the Walls are lined with cannons, which can fire on approaching Titans, even though they are not particularly effective due to the Titan's regeneration abilities.[6] To account for this, each one has four towns on their periphery known as "districts". As Titans are drawn towards large concentrations of people, humanity can focus its defences at these districts and not the rest of the Wall. The districts are considered the worst and least desirable places to live, as they are at greater risk of a Titan invasion.[7]
Few people know about the Titans within the Walls, or that they were created from Titans.[8] The Survey Corps learned of their existence when the Female Titan damaged the surface of Wall Sheena, exposing the face of a huge Titan. Minister Nick, a foremost member of a cult which considers the Walls to be holy, knew of the Titans within them, but would reveal no more under the interrogation of Hange Zoë. It is unknown how commonplace this knowledge is within the Church of the Walls.
The Walls (壁Kabe?) are large structures located on the island of Paradis that surround the territory where King Fritz fled with many of his people, the Eldians, and protect them from the Titans that rule the rest of the island.[1] They were built more than a century ago.[2] Names and other information :
Wall Maria is the outermost Wall of the human kingdom. Like the other Walls, Wall Maria is approximately 50 meters in height. Five years ago, it was breached by the Colossus Titan and Armored Titan, after a century of peace and prosperity, and was lost to the Titans.[22] Six years later it was repopulated, after the hole in Shiganshina District was sealed by Eren Yeager and all the titans inside the walls were killed.
Wall Rose is the second outermost Wall following Wall Maria. It was breached by the Colossus Titan 5 years after the fall of Wall Maria, but the breach was later sealed by Eren Yeager with assistance from the military. It was thought to have been breached again after Titans appeared inside it a little over a month later.[23]
Wall Sheena is the innermost Wall protecting the kingdom where the king and other civilians reside. The cities of Wall Sheena are protected by the Military Police serving under the king. The underground is poorer and more prone to criminal activity.
Technology
The firearms used by the Military are based on the flintlock mechanism, where a piece of flint ignites the gunpowder and fires the gun, which must be reloaded after every shot. These come in the form of muskets, pistols, buckshot rifles, hand cannons, and flintlock sniper rifles. The firearm technology has not progressed much as guns were proved ineffective against the titans.[9] The Survey Corps and the Garrison also use flare-guns to communicate over long distances. As mentioned, cannons line the top of the Walls. While each one originally had its own track so it could be pushed to the outer edge or the inner edge, tracks were later laid along the entire Wall to connect them all and enabled them to be pushed to different positions.
One of the most sophisticated pieces of technology the Walls use is the vertical manoeuvring equipment. The advances needed for the system to work include steel wire, compressing gas under pressure, and ultra hard steel (which can only be manufactured in the blast furnaces of factory cities) used to make blades.[10][11]
Only horses are used for transportation. Photography is not something that the people inside the Walls know about, as Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman, Hange Zoë and Levi Ackerman are not able to identify the photo of Grisha, Dina, and Zeke Yeager without Grisha's note written on the backside.[12] History
One hundred and seven years ago, it is said that humans were brought to the brink of extinction at the hands of the Titans "almost overnight". In response to this, the survivors made huge Walls to protect their last stronghold.[13]
The current status of the Walls is chaotic. Shiganshina District was the first city to fall when Wall Maria was breached, leading to a massive slaughter and prompting humanity to abandon the entire perimeter and the remaining cities along the Wall as they attempted to consolidate their losses. After the fall of Wall Maria, humanity was pushed into Wall Rose.[14] Soon after a massive campaign to retake Wall Maria was launched as nearly 250,000 conscripted soldiers were sent out to wipe out the Titans; this campaign ended in disaster and saw the near-total annihilation of the army tasked with this mission. Within five years after that, Trost District was breached, though it ultimately survived due to the intervention of Eren Yeager, while also ensuring the local population's survival.[15] Some time later, Wall Sheena and Stohess District were heavily damaged when Eren did battle with the Female Titan.[16] On the same day, the population of a small village named Ragako was overtaken by Titans.[17] Afterwards the military took the royal capital,[18] then a Titan twice the size of the Colossus Titan appeared and caused major damages to Orvud District.[19]
After five years of abandonment, the Survey Corps returned to Shiganshina District and successfully sealed the hole in Wall Maria.[20] Thus far a prolonged battle with the Colossus Titan, Armored Titan, and the Beast Titan has ensured the Wall's survival, but at the cost of nearly the entire expedition and massive damage to the ruined city. The battle resulted in huge losses among the Titans residing within and outside Wall Maria, as well as the death of Titan shifter Bertolt Hoover at the hands of Armin Arlert, ending the Colossal Titan's reign of terror. With the battle over, the nine surviving members of the Survey Corps returned to Trost District.[21]

Wall Sheena is the innermost Wall protecting the kingdom where the king and other civilians reside. The cities of Wall Sheena are protected by the Military Police serving under the king. The underground is poorer and more prone to criminal activity.
In the anime, a story elaborating on the nature of the Walls is given in Episode 25. It was discovered by a miner with twenty years of experience who attempted to dig under Wall Rose to reach Wall Sheena and after digging to the bottom, that the ground below them was made of the same material as the Wall and that they also seem to extend surrounding human territory underground.[24] In the manga, Roy tells a similar story to Hange Zoë, giving some validity to the anime-only event.[25]
In the first episode of the anime, the distance from Wall Maria to Wall Rose is said to be about 100 km, the distance from Wall Rose to Wall Sheena is about 130 km, and the radius of Wall Sheena is about 250 km.[26] Assuming the Walls to be perfect circles, this would make the total perimeter of Wall Maria to be around 3.016 km and the total area inside the Walls 723,822 km². In the manga, no exact measurements for humanity's territory are given.
Quinta District is a located on the western side of Wall Maria. It somehow survived the initial Titan attack from year 845 but was abandoned six months afterward.[27]
Trivia
Titans primarily targeted the southern region, even before the loss of Wall Maria. As such, they are considered the most dangerous and least desirable places to live in.[28]
The northern districts are considered the most desirable region, due to minimal Titan activity. However, the weather is brutally cold and makes life for residents very difficult. Hajime Isayama suggested they may have hot springs to make up for the harsh weather.[28][29]
Isayama has described the northern region as relatively cold, rarely exceeding 30° C even on the hottest summer days.[30]
"Rose" was the East Germany's secret codename plan to build the Berlin Wall.[31]
In the early draft of chapter 1 presented by Isayama to the editors of the Weekly Shōnen Magazine, Wall Maria and Wall Rose were switched, so Wall Rose was the outermost Wall breached by the Colossus Titan, and Wall Maria was the second outermost Wall to where the survivors retreated.[32]
If the estimates given by the anime are to be trusted, and assuming each Wall Titan is about 50 m high and about 20 m wide, there would need to be at least 150,797 of them inside Wall Maria (rough estimate, not counting doors, district Walls, etc.) to make a perfect circle.
Trost District
The Trost District (トロスト区Torosuto-ku?) is a town located on the south edge of Wall Rose. Because Trost is the town closest to the breach in Wall Maria, it is the town that most frequently comes under attack from Titans.
Five years after the fall of Wall Maria, the Colossus Titan appears again and breaks down the outer gate, causing the district to be invaded by Titans.[2] Eren makes an attempt at killing the Colossus Titan, but it vanishes before he can reach its nape. After regrouping with the other trainees, he finds out they were too scared by the Titan to help him attack.
After the breach, the trainees engage the Titans in the district, resulting in huge casualties to the Garrison. Notable deaths include Thomas Wagner, Mina Carolina, Nac Tias, Mylius Zeramuski,[3]Franz Kefka, Hannah Diamant, Tom, Ian Dietrich, Marco Bott, and Mitabi Jarnach, among others. However, the entire civilian populace successfully evacuated in the hours immediately following the breach, thanks to the efforts of soldiers such as Mikasa Ackerman. This is also the district in which Eren Yeager and the other trainees discover his mysterious Titan-shifting ability. This prompts the Garrison, under the command of Dot Pixis to devise a plan to seal the breach using a large boulder. The district is saved when Eren changes into his Titan form and successfully blocks the breached gate with the boulder.[4] Soon after, the Survey Corps arrive and aid the Garrison in clearing out the remaining stragglers.
Two months after Historia is crowned, Hange Zoë, with the help of Eren's hardening powers, builds a device that can kill Titans without exposing soldiers to them. It is built on the sealed gate and works similar to a guillotine, smashing the Titan's nape with great force.
Trivia
It is rather ironic that Trost comes under Titan attack the most, since "Trost" means 'solace' or 'comfort' in German.
Utopia District (ユトピア区Yutopia-ku?) is the northernmost district of Wall Rose. Little is known about this district as it has not been featured in the main story as of yet
Story
Clash of the Titans arc
The Utopia District is briefly mentioned by Armin Arlert in the mission to rescue Eren Yeager from the Armored Titan. He tells Bertolt Hoover that Annie Leonhart has been captured and that she is currently being tortured for information in the district's underground. This distracts Bertolt long enough for Erwin Smith to climb on the Armored Titan and swing his sword down Bertolt's torso, freeing Eren who was tied to his back.[1]
At some unknown point in the past, the Royal Government ordered the construction of an underground city below this district and others within Wall Sheena, but the plan was abandoned during construction leaving unused tunnels below the city.[1]
Story The Female Titan arc
The Stohess District is the prime location of the destruction caused by Annie Leonhart in her Titan Form, after Eren Yeager, Armin Arlert, Mikasa Ackerman and the Survey Corps expose her true identity. When a convoy takes Jean Kirstein (who is disguised as Eren) to the Imperial Capital for judgment, this is but a ploy against Annie to expose her. After a fight between her and Eren, she is ultimately captured, but causes considerable damage to the District, including opening up a crack in the Wall, revealing the Titan inside it. Erwin Smith takes full responsibility of the destruction of the District.[2]
When Mikasa Ackerman inspects this crack, the Titan's eyes follow her movements, proving that the Titan is indeed alive. At the instruction of Minister Nick, the Survey Corps quickly covers it with fabric to prevent the sunlight from awakening it. Hange Zoë takes a sample of Annie's Titan armor and discovers that it is identical to the Wall's composition, revealing that the Wall was made using the Wall Titans' hardening ability.[3]
Shortly prior to Erwin's execution plans, Anka Rheinberger announces to the Military officials who are holding him that the Armored and Colossus Titans appeared at Stohess District, destroying both gates and breaching Wall Rose. This however was a ploy that was devised by Dot Pixis to test the officials' manner of action in times of uncertainty.
Ehrmich District
The Ehrmich District (エルミハ区Erumiha-ku?) is a town located on the south edge of Wall Sheena.
Story
A group including Eren Yeager, Armin Arlert, Hange Zoë, and Nick passes through Ehrmich District on their way to investigate the appearance of Titans within Wall Rose. Due to the assumption that Wall Rose has been breached, the district is filled with refugees trying to evacuate to Wall Sheena.[1]
OrvuThe Orvud District (オルブド区Orubudo-ku?) is the northern district of Wall Sheena.[1] d District
Story After turning himself into an enormous Titan and surfacing above ground, Rod Reiss slowly makes his way towards the Orvud District. As an abnormal Titan with no true control of himself, he is drawn by the amount of people in the city. Under Erwin Smith's orders they are not to evacuate the citizens for fear that he will then be drawn towards Wall Sheena.[2] Erwin proposes to wait for Rod Reiss from the city and he creates an emergency plan of evacuation.[3] The Garrison accept his plan and wait for him at dawn at the top of the Wall.
The soldiers prepare to fight a top of Orvud District's Wall
The Garrison launch a massive attack against the Titan with a cannon barrage.[4] They inflict much damage on the Titan, but it withstands the attack. The frightened people inside the city can only watch as the gargantuan Titan manages to climb the Wall.[5] Three children in the city remind Eren of the time when he, Armin, and Mikasa were children too and they had to watch as Shiganshina District was destroyed by the Colossus Titan.[6] However the Survey Corps has a plan to use gunpowder to blow Rod's hands first and then his head, exposing his real body. The plan succeeds and Rod is killed by Historia at the top of the Wall.[7] After that she falls onto a wagon at the lower part of the Wall, where she finds Orvud's citizens watching the battle. They recognize her as the person who killed the Titan. There she announces that she is the new queen.[8]

Trivia
"Orvud" is an Estonian word which means "orphans".
According to Levi, the Garrison of this district are less effective than the Garrison of Wall Rose, because they are not used to fighting Titans.[
Mitras
The Capital, Mitras (ミットラス王都Mittorasu Ōto?) is the area of land surrounded by Wall Sheena, the innermost of the three Walls. It has a population of about 200,000 people.[citation needed] It is the residence of the King and upper-class citizenry, and serves as the capital of the kingdom. One may also earn residency rights through meritorious service in the Garrison or Military Police, which is considered the sole means for the poor to gain safe refuge.[citation needed] The Military Police Brigade are headquartered in the Inner District and protect the peace; this leads to fierce competition among military trainees to join, as it is the only posting where they will not be in danger from Titans.
After the failure of the 57th expedition, Eren Yeager was allegedly going to be returned to the Inner District for judgment. However, the true purpose of the trip was to expose the true identity of the Female Titan, Annie Leonhart. After being discovered, Annie attempted to scale the Wall; however, she was stopped by Eren in his Titan form with the aid of Mikasa Ackerman. Part of the Wall suffered damage and revealed a Titan within it, but was quickly covered up at Nick's urging.[1]
Erwin is brought to the Inner District for his trial.
Shiganshina District
The Shiganshina District (シガンシナ区Shiganshina-ku?) is a town located on the south edge of Wall Maria; and is the hometown of Eren Yeager, Armin Arlert, and Mikasa Ackerman. The district is built within an outcrop of Wall Maria. Since Shiganshina is located to the south, Titans usually came to this districts Walls in an attempt to consume humans, but were only able to break through in the year 845 because of the 60 meters high Colossus Titan.[1]
Name: Shiganshina District シガンシナ区 Shiganshina-ku
Other spellings: Zhiganshina District (Crunchyroll sub)
In the year 845, the Colossus Titan breached Wall Maria and the front gate of Shiganshina by kicking a hole through it, allowing Titans to overrun the city. Shortly afterwards, the Armored Titan broke down the back gate, fully breaching Wall Maria and forcing humanity to abandon Wall Maria and retreat behind Wall Rose. It is also the first city to be attacked by the Titans after a century of peace.[2]
There is little mention of Shiganshina after the attack. Erwin decides to appear at the recruitment ceremony of the 104th Training Corps to persuade them to join the Survey Corps. Erwin mentions the basement in Eren's house, and how it can hold the answer to the mystery of the Titans. He also explains that by accessing his basement, they would need to find a way to reclaim Shiganshina and Wall Maria altogether. A month later, Erwin and the Survey Corps set out on the 57th expedition as a practise run to Shiganshina.
After Reiner Braun, Bertolt Hoover and Ymir manage to escape from the Survey Corps in the Titan Forest, they head towards Shiganshina. They rest above the Wall and have a conversation, in which Ymir confesses that she wants to go with them in order to repay them for the death of Marcel.[3]
After the coronation of Historia, Reiner, Bertolt and the Beast Titan are stationed in Shiganshina, waiting for the Survey Corps to come and steal the Coordinate from Eren.
When the plans to retake Wall Maria are ready, the Survey Corps start an expedition towards Shiganshina at night time, when most of the Titans would be shutting down.[4] As the soldiers arrive in the district, they begin the operation and 100 soldiers travel to the exterior gate covered with hoods and cloaks in an attempt to confuse the enemy so they would not know what soldier is Eren.[5] After making his way to the top of the Wall, Eren freezes when he sees his hometown for the first time in 6 years, but is quickly pushed on by Levi and he makes his way to the gate, preparing to transform.[6] Finally, Eren transforms and seals the hole with his hardened Titan body.
However, their seeming success is soon interrupted by the arrival of the Armored Titan and the Colossal Titan, during which the latter kills most of the soldiers inside the district and destroys much of the abandoned city, save for the members of Squad Levi and some stragglers. During this, the Beast Titan wipes out the soldiers evacuating the Corps' horses, fatally wounding Erwin Smith in the process. However, a last-ditch assault concocted by the survivors sees the Armored and Colossal Titans successfully incapacitated, with Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover captured alive. The Beast Titan is also disarmed by Levi, who wipes out his army of Titans surrounding the district. The battle sees the near-death of Armin Arlert, who is administered the Titan serum by Levi and resurrects as a Titan shifter.[citation needed] While Zeke and Reiner are rescued by the Quadrupedal Titan, Bertolt is eaten alive by the transformed Armin as the Homelanders are forced to retreat from Shiganshina.
Nine months later, after all the Titans inside Wall Maria had been killed with the Titan guillotines, the former residents of Shiganshina returned to live in the city.
In the year 845, shortly after the fall of Shiganshina District, citizens of Quinta were evacuated to Wall Rose but were overwhelmed by Titans before the evacuation could be completed. As a result, around half of the district's population was left behind. Neither government officials or high-ranking officers of the Military remained in the city after the district became isolated, and authority over the city fell to a Garrison soldier name Rita Iglehaut. Shortly after the fall of Wall Maria, Rita established a dictatorship within Quinta and declared it to be a sovereign territory outside of the jurisdiction of the Royal Government.[1]
Six months after the fall of Wall Maria, Titans that had climbed atop Wall Maria invaded the district, and the territory was abandoned.
"Quinta" is a Portuguese word whose general meaning is "a house on the outskirts of the town, or in the country", possibly referencing the position of the eponymous district on the outermost of the Walls.
